Topic: Scraping the middle of cane on easel

Hi all-
I just watched the first video from oboist Liang Wang on Mucony's website talking about what he does before he shapes his cane.  He first places it on an easel and before he scores the middle, scrapes some off of the surface of the bark.  He then scores the cane in the middle, shapes the cane, and then removes the ears before tying on.  Does anyone else do this process, and if so, how many .mm across do you make the scrape on the easel?  Does this help prevent the sides of the tip from leaking (something I've been having a problem with recently)?
Thanks,
Jennifer M.
