The final round of the 2012 IDRS Young Artist Oboe Competition was held at the conference on Monday, July 9th at 9am in the lovely Kumler Chapel at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. All three finalists performed at a very high level.

The final judges were John Dee (University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, USA), Geralyn Giovannetti (Brigham Young University, USA) and Christopher Redgate (Soloist, England). The results were announced on the evening of the competition.

The first prize winner was Juri Schmahl, a student of Clara Dent-Bogányi at the Hochschule fuer Musik Nuernberg,Germany. He won $3000 and a recital at the IDRS Conference.

Chi Yuen “Bobby” Cheng (a student of Song-Lam Yiu in Hong Kong) was awarded second prize of $2000.

Gretchen Myers, a student of Frank Rosenwein at the Cleveland Institute of Music, USA, was awarded the third prize of $1000.

The IDRS would also like to acknowledge Julia DeRosa (a student of Elaine Douvas at the Juilliard School, USA) who was initially selected as a finalist but was unable to attend due to a tour with the Juilliard Orchestra.
