A 5-day course on the beautiful Scottish west coast island of Raasay, led by leading british bassoon soloist Laurence Perkins

Improve your playing! Here is a unique opportunity for bassoonists of all levels to explore and develop a wide range of technical and musical aspects in their playing. This course (running from Monday to Friday) will cover in depth many of the main technical details necessary to achieve a good and satisfying standard of playing, including breathing and support, embouchure, resonance and tone production, tuning and practice technique. There are opportunities to take part in a solo performance class with piano – and of course there will be bassoon ensembles (graded according to playing level) – this will include a link with the bass clarinet course (running parallel) to play a wonderfully resonant version of the finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture for multiple bassoons and bass clarinets!

Island explorations between sessions, chances to explore a wonderful place, a remote Scottish island nestling between the magnificent Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye and the spectacular Applecross peninsular on the mainland. The weather varies, but there are often good days at this time of year, and the big advantage is that it is before most of the midges come out! Travel: flight to Glasgow, bus to Skye (Sconser ferry terminal) and ferry to Raasay. It’s an adventure, quite a lengthy journey overland, but through the most fabulous Scottish landscapes.
