Thanks to Bennie Cottone for letting us know about his passing and to Dianne Winsor for writing the obituary.
I am sad to report the passing of Larry (John Laurence) Thorstenberg, Solo English Horn with Boston Symph. 1964 – 1993 last week after a long illness, in hospice in Marin County, California.

Mr. Thorstenberg was born Dec. 6, 1925 in Salt Lake CIty Utah. He served in the US Army 1944-46, and played with the US Army Field Band. He graduated from the Curtis Institute in 1951 where he was a pupil of Marcel Tabuteau.

He was a past member of the Utah, Baltimore, Dallas & Chicago Symphonies and performed summers at the Marlboro Music Festival. He was an Emeritus member of ICSOM.

Mr. Thorstenberg retired to Marin County, California in 1998. He is with his beloved dog, Chipper, in this 2011 photo.

Here is Mr. Thorstenberg’s magnificent interpretation of The Swan of Tuonela (video may be unavailable in some countries): tinyurl.com/ya2ft432
