Bio: K. David van Hoesen served as professor of bassoon at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, from 1954 to 1991, and as principal bassoon of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1954 to 1974. Prior to his appointment at Eastman, he was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell from 1952 to 1954, at which time he was also professor at Oberlin College. As professor at Eastman for 37 years, van Hoesen was teacher of bassoonists who won numerous positions in major symphony orchestras all over the world. Moreover, many of his former students hold professorships at major universities and con-servatories of music. As a performer he recorded often with the Rochester Philharmonic. His solo recording of the Alec Wilder Bassoon Sonata #3, and the Phillis McGinley Song Cycle for soprano, bassoon and harp, along with the Duo for Bassoon and Piano by Alan Blank is available on the CRI label as part of the "Music from Eastman" series. In retirement van Hoesen continues to perform as bassoonist with the Lake Placid (New York) Sinfonietta.
