Bio: Valeri Popov (bassoon) is professor of bassoon and director of wind sections at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where he has taught since 1971. Principal bassoonist with the USSR State Symphony from 1962 to 1988, he has recorded virtually the entire bassoon literature on CD. Popov won first prize in the 1963 All-Russian Bassoon Competition and the 1965 Bassoon Competition in Budapest. In 1986 he was named a People's Artist of the Russian Republic. A specialist in the Russian avant-garde, he is the dedicatee of more than two dozen works for bassoon. Popov studied at the Moscow Conservatory.
