Bio: Stevens Hewitt originally studied to be a chemist. After World War II service in Africa and Italy, he graduated Juilliard as a student of Harold Gomberg. His principal teacher was Clement Lenom (1865-1957), composer, conductor, and oboist of the Boston Symphony. Mr. Hewitt, played with Martha Graham, the Royal Ballet (Sadler's Wells), the American Ballet Theatre, the Baltimore and Washington Symphonies, the New Orleans Symphony and Opera, and at Marlboro. After twentyfour years, he is now retired from the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has written an oboe method, is on the faculty of Temple University, and is the woodwind coach for the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. He enjoys collecting rare old wind music and arranging music for woodwinds.
