Many oboists will recognize this work from Albert Andrauds's 'blue book' of solos for oboe and piano entitled The Oboist's Concert Album. This piece is one of 12 Solos de Concert composed by Stanislas Verroust (1814-1863) for use at the Paris Conservatoire. Verroust, himself, was a graduate of the Conservatoire, succeeding the genius, Henri Brod, as principal oboist at the Paris Opéra in 1839. It was not until 1853 that Verroust took over from his teacher, the highly regarded Gustave Vogt, as professor of oboe at the Conservatoire.

The Solos of Verroust are divided into two categories. The first includes works in the scena tradition like the two bassoon works of Jancourt and Willent-Bordogni presented in this series. The second category, of which Solo No. 4 of 1859 is a part, includes three-movement concertos, but with an important difference: the first movement is truncated where the development would have begun.

Solo No. 4 is set in D minor, the slow movement being placed in the parallel major. Overall, the musical line and harmony of this work derive from the opéra comique, the Polacca finale being a major characteristic of that kind of musical theatre.

The house of Richault originally included the string parts for this work along with the customary piano score and oboe part. As it was lacking in the set I obtained, I created a full score for oboe and strings from the piano score.
