New American Voices for Bassoon
Cayla Bellamy, bassoon
Jooyeon Chang, piano
Michelle Stanley, flute

This recital aims to expand our concept of "American" bassoon repertoire to include a greater variety of living composers by featuring new works by women, people of color, and early career students. Of the six living composers featured on this program, two identify as women, two are from the Black community, and one is a previously unpublished student composer. These composers each develop their own version of the “bassoon voice,” which contrasts not only each other, but also the limited, antiquated voices of the bassoon’s traditional sound and expressive uses. The works presented here represent this progression since 2008 and encompass soaring melodies, nimble leaps, grace, and heavy metal infused distortion.
