Suzanne Jennison, oboe
A prolific orchestral work for oboe, “L’Horloge de Flore,” is celebrated for its beauty and charm as it illustrates themes of nature and time— but what do we know about the origins of the piece? This lecture will offer an examination of political, social, and cultural factors that may have inspired Jean Françaix to write “L’Horloge de Flore.” It will also include an analysis of the compositional strategies that Françaix employed to depict the subject matter. The original piano reduction will be discussed and a transcription of the piece for solo oboe, woodwind quartet, and piano will be introduced.
