Lessons from Braiding Sweetgrass

Lessons from Braiding Sweetgrass

Nora Lewis, oboe

This performance features Braiding: Lessons from Braiding Sweetgrass, a powerful and inspiring work by Indian-American composer Asha Srinivasan (b. 1980). This work draws from Srinivasan’s Western musical training and her Indian heritage to create compositional language that evokes gratitude for the resonant wood from which the oboe is constructed, ways to listen to and connect with the natural environment that surrounds us, and ways that wind playing can, “animate the inanimate”. These themes were inspired by Robin Kimmerer’s book of the same name.
