Anish Raj Pandit and I have something in common: we’re both from Indiana and studied at the Jacobs School of Music. Our formal oboe training follows a similar trajectory; you might say we belong to the same school of playing. In addition to being a fine oboist, Pandit is also a self-taught Indian vocalist. His immersion in the traditions and repertoire of Indian classical singers has deeply informed his musicianship. We’re often encouraged to “sing through the oboe.” Pandit has composed several works for solo oboe which provide an opportunity for us – and our students – to do just that.
