Revolution from Within: Three Composers Who Made the Conservatoire Less Conservative
Jeffrey Lyman, bassoon; Liz Ames, piano
Revolution from Within: Three Composers Who Made the Conservatoire Less Conservative. Yoshihisa Taïra and Tôn-Thât Tiêt were the first Asian composers to write works used as morceaux de concours for bassoon at the Paris Conservatoire, and Odette Gartenlaub was one of only four women in the history of the school to write for the bassoon concours. My program will feature three of their works: Taïra's Monodrame II, Tôn-Thât's Jeu des cinq éléments II (original version) and Gartenlaub's Profils (1966, rev. 2000). All three of these groundbreaking works pushed the bassoon far beyond the typical expressive world of the Conservatoire's concours and have taken their place as some of the most challenging works for our instrument.
