The Bassoon Music of Gordon Jacob: Balancing Complex Composition with Listener Accessibility in the Allegro Movement of the Concerto for Bassoon and Strings
This lecture will discuss some of the musical patterns found within Gordon Jacob’s Concerto for Bassoon and Strings. More specifically, set theory and neo-Riemannian theory will be explored as an option for analyzing how the complex pitch-class sets and key relations may be perceived as accessible to the listener. Following the lecture is a performance of the Allegro movement of the concerto featuring bassoonist Lindsey Wiehl and pianist Yi-Hsuan Hecko.
