Staci Spring, bassoon
A socially just society acknowledges diversity and celebrates the expression of individual differences. However, applied music teaching often does not prepare future professionals to engage with diverse individuals and communities in purposeful ways. This implies that musicians, teachers, and students should re-examine the role of the arts from a performance standpoint, and also consider the relationships among musical artists and the numerous communities in which they might participate. Three perspectives in particular warrant close inspection and consideration: artistic citizenship, community engagement, and teaching artistry.
