Cornelia Sommer, bassoon
Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella serves as an ideal example of Stravinsky’s expertise as an arranger. The 1920 ballet, based on works by Pergolesi and other Baroque composers, and two versions of Suite Italienne, based on Pulcinella, showcase his skill in arranging music by other composers as well as his own music. This lecture will explore Stravinsky’s approach to double-reed writing in creating a neoclassical sound and his collaborations with well-known instrumentalists on Suite Italienne. The lecture will conclude with a performance of a new arrangement of selections from Pulcinella for bassoon and piano, published by TrevCo Music Publishing.
