Despite living in this age of information, little research exists surrounding the Viennese oboe. Perhaps even more scarce is the opportunity to hear this unique instrument live. I recognized this as a huge gap within our community, and sought to remedy it by living in Vienna for a year, studying the instrument and carrying out research funded by Fulbright. As a result, I wrote my article “The Viennese Oboe and its Classical/Romantic Traditions” which was published in Vol. 42, no. 3 of the IDRS Double Reed, and will now present these ideas and more in lecture-recital form.
