Can you recommend music that is not too difficult for 2 oboes, 1 English Horn, and 2 bassoons (and maybe contra) for a high school double reed ensemble with limited rehearsal time? I would like to program one original work from the Baroque and two other fun pieces. Thanks.

Carol, Write to TrevCo-Varner Music for a fine collection for that combination. Send a message to: trevcovarnermusic@gmail.com

Can I suggest Gershwin’s ‘Rialto Ripples’ Rag for 2 oboes, English Horn and 2 bassoons, available from http://www.wonderfulwinds.com.

We also have a selection of other double reed ensemble pieces for players at all levels, including 3 movements from Bizet’s Carmen and Beethoven’s Turkish March which might also be perfect for your players, and a large number of oboe trio arrangements.

    Hope this helps!

Carol, in addition to Trevco-Varner that Chris suggested, you may wish to search Sandro Caldini’s English horn bibliography available on the IDRS main website http://www.idrs.org/resources/EHBlibliography/home.php?. The code for the instrumentation you describe would be 2 ob,eh,2 bn. Let us know if you find original Baroque works for this setting.
    -best wishes,
    Dwight
