Highlights from IDRS 2018

IDRS Double Reed Band – 2026 Conference, Oxford, Ohio, USA
For the first time in 2026, IDRS will be making the double reed band (often called the Handel Fireworks event in the past and internationally known as the IDRS Double Reed Band for setting the Guinness World Record in 2018, Spain: 500 oboes and bassoons) an official, ongoing conference activity. Previously an ad hoc endeavor, the IDRS Double Reed Band will be open to IDRS members and conference attendees of every level of experience. The IDRS Double Reed Band is one of the most vibrant and participatory events of the annual conference. Designed to unite oboists and bassoonists, the ensemble celebrates community and shared musical traditions. Professional musicians, amateurs, and students from around the world are invited to join in this unique musical experience.
Repertoire
The ensemble will perform works written or arranged specifically for double reeds, featuring chamber-ensemble textures and a variety of styles suitable for a wide range of skill levels. All sheet music will be provided in advance so participants can prepare comfortably before the conference.
Requirements
- All performers must be IDRS members and registered conference participants.
- Attendance at at least one scheduled rehearsal is required.
Rehearsals & Performance
We will share the confirmed schedule soon
- The ensemble will hold a few rehearsals during the conference and at least one full rehearsal prior to the performance.
- The Double Reed Band will present a short performance during the conference program.
Why Participate?
Participating in the Double Reed Band offers the chance to perform with an international community of double-reed players while exploring repertoire written or arranged specifically for these instruments. The ensemble provides a supportive and collaborative environment that helps musicians develop ensemble skills and enjoy a musically rewarding experience. Beyond the performance itself, the band serves as a fun and social highlight within the conference.
