She Sings! Poetry in Sound
Christa Garvey, oboe
Diana Cataldi, soprano
Lori Cruciani, piano

This program is an outgrowth of an ongoing faculty research project exploring music by female composers and/or poets. In particular, this performance presents IDRS CONFERENCE PREMIERES for soprano, oboe, and piano that deserve a wider audience recognition. The first work, titled "Two Poems" (2004), composed by Ivar Lunde, Jr. captivatingly brings the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Denise Levertov Goodman to life in music in two short songs. The second work is " In Sleep The World Is Yours" (2013) by Lori Laitman with poetry by Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger. The three poems, by a young writer who died in a Ukrainian labor camp in 1942, musically create a cycle with a dramatic arc that explores love, hope, memories, and unimaginable heartbreak.
