The International Double Reed Society invites proposals for our 56th conference to be held June 2-6, 2027 at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, USA. IDRS is a worldwide organization of professional double reed players, students, amateurs, avocational players, university/college instructors, music teachers, institutions, instrument manufacturers, double reed product retailers, reed makers, and enthusiasts. We welcome proposals that serve, speak to, and represent the richness of our multi-faceted membership.

We aim to assemble a varied conference program and encourage proposals that will comprehensively represent the wide scope of historical, stylistic, and pedagogical approaches to double reed playing. Accordingly, we welcome well-known, new, and lesser-known works from all periods and genres. This is especially true for evening concerts, where we plan to cultivate an increased variety of repertoire and instrumentation in concerto, chamber, and solo performances. It should be noted that performance opportunities on evening concerts are extremely limited and that artists are encouraged to submit proposals for both daytime and evening. Performers at an IDRS conference evening concert can play a maximum of two years in a row.

Important Submission Information

Please submit a new form for each conference proposal using the links below. New this year, individual members can appear in no more than three proposal submissions. This includes the totality of proposal submissions in which they are included. Members will have the opportunity to communicate the prioritization preference of their submissions within the proposal form.

Take note that no artist will perform more than twice during any given conference.

A “performance” can be a shared or single recital appearance, a masterclass, a lecture-presentation/lightning talk, workshop, panel discussion as a presenter, or any combination of these. According to a newly-approved policy by the board of directors in 2026, exceptions that will not count towards the total are:

• Judging the Poster Session, Gillet-Fox, or Norma Hooks Young Artist International Competitions.
• Participating in a panel discussion.
• Participating as a student in a masterclass.
• Performing as part of a shared “tribute” concert.
• Student Ensembles
• Poster Session Participation
• IDRS conference activities (Contraband, Baroque Band, Double Reed Band and Reading Groups)
• IDRS events organized by Committees (DEIB reading sessions / affinity spaces/ membership committees events)
• IDRS events organized by Staff / Board members for the society (President open office, DR Journal editors open discussion etc).

Additionally, the following restrictions on repertoire are new as of this year:

• No piece may be programmed twice unless it is in a different event category.
• A total of up to 4 works written by one composer may be performed during a whole conference.
  • Exceptions include a composer tribute concert or a presentation that may be analyzing a specific work.

Conference Artistic Proposals must be submitted by October 15, 2026.

Registration and Membership Requirements

All IDRS Conference Artists must be IDRS Members and registered for the conference.

We understand that some members might have conflicting schedules and may not be available for the full 5 days. However we encourage presenters and performers in all proposal categories to attend the entire conference and understand their event may be scheduled at any time during the conference schedule.

Registration will be open from mid-January 2027 onwards.

• Assisting artists (accompanists or other collaborative artists who are not double reed players) will have their registration fee waived for the day that they perform. If they wish to attend additional days of the conference, they must pay registration fees for those days.
• Composers whose works are being performed will have their registration fee waived for the day that their composition is performed. If they wish to attend additional days of the conference, they must pay registration fees for those days.

Please take note that all submissions are final (cannot be edited after submission) and partial drafts cannot be saved. This is a recent change that was implemented in 2025. We strongly encourage drafting proposals in a word processor and pasting responses in the form fields when ready to submit. Because this is a curated event, IDRS reserves the right to modify any accepted proposal according to programming needs in collaboration with the artist. This includes, but is not limited to, changes in repertoire, personnel, duration, program description, or other aspects which could otherwise conflict with program limitations
