The inspiration behind “Double Jazz” comes from my recognition of the lack of woodwind literature with a foundation in jazz, particularly when it comes to double reeds. I wanted to create a jazz chart that would allow double reed players to have fun and challenge themselves with something that is specifically tailored to them. It is my invitation for them to explore a different world of music than they may be used to playing.

I researched numerous saxophone solis, such as “Groovin’ Hard” by Buddy Rich; “Tall Cotton” by Count Basie and his Orchestra; and “Groove Merchant” by Mel Lewis and Thad Jones, in order to form and consolidate my ideas. I especially want to thank Mr. Jaquan Wiley, my Assistant Band Director at Asheville High School, for introducing me to this style of literature and curating some pieces for me to explore when writing this chart.

Elliot Lippy

My interest in music began at age 13 with the violin. I began composing a year or two later with a cello duet followed by a short work for piano which kickstarted my interest into not only playing music but writing it as well. In 2021 I premiered A New Years Quartet at the IDRS conference in Colorado with the 4th Infantry Division Army Band. I am currently a sophomore studying at The Juilliard School in New York.

This piece is a formal palindrome with a slow twisting chromatic opening followed by a slow dance-like section which closes with the slow twisting chromatic motive which this time becomes extremely simple. Closing the piece with a calm tranquillity.

Bird's Fête
for A Cappella Choir

"Bird's fête" is a theatrical-comic work for a-cappella choir, sometimes simulates the birds' flight in a group and sometimes the solo tweet of different birds.
You can hear authentic quotes (in pitch and tempo) of an owl, canary and cuckoo tweets that develop into a dialogue, multi dialogue, a soloist against the group – just like a map of human relations – and back to the entire group's dance.

The work is based on the words from Psalms 84:
The sparrow hath found a house
and the swallow a nest for herself

From among the branches they sing

All of them wait for Thee
Thou openest Thy hand, they are satisfied with good

The composition ends with a short choral on words from Psalms, 104:
How manifold are Thy works, O LORD!
In wisdom hast Thou made them all
The earth is full of Thy creatures
Bless the LORD, O my soul

Hallelujah

The composition "Yizkerem" is for an A-cappella Choir (SATB) and deals with the tragedy of the Holocaust for the Jewish nation.

This composition is dedicated to Prof. Alexander Tamir (Wolkowyski), a Holocaust survivor who, as an 11 year old boy in the Vilna ghetto, composed the melody for the poem about the massacre of "Ponar", which became one of the symbols of the Holocaust.

I will not forget the chilling story he told me: The truck that took his father – Dr. Noah Wolkowyski – and other Jews to be shot by the Nazis returned to the concentration camp empty. On the side was an inscription written with a finger dipped in blood: "They are killing us, Take revenge!"
There are mortal sins that are not forgiven, and even in the holy texts can be found legitimacy for the act of revenge that doesn't bear the inconceivable human tragedy. Despite this, the purpose of the work is not only to express feelings and to sanctify the memory of those who perished, but mainly for the sake of remembering, so we will live in a world that raises the banner of peace and brotherhood of nations. Is this to be a vision only?

Yizkerem - in Hebrew: May Our Lord Remember Them.

Thacher Schreiber

Los Angeles-based oboist and composer Thacher Schreiber’s music ranges from romantic to acerbic, and everywhere in between. A musician since the age of eight and a composer since the age of fourteen, his interests lie in maintaining a diverse musical portfolio, from works for chamber ensembles and solo instruments to song cycles and symphonic works.

Thacher began composing in high school, trying his hand at his own little pieces and arrangements for oboe and piano. He gradually began making transcriptions and arrangements for his school’s wind ensemble and other groups. It was here that he began to absorb the fundamentals of composition, transcribing works from such masters as Bach, Bernstein, Ives, Ligeti, and Stravinsky.

All through his undergraduate studies at California State University, Northridge and the University of California, Los Angeles, Thacher threw himself into a plethora of harmony and formal analysis classes, as well as studying orchestration with composers Dwayne Milburn, Kay Rhie, and Richard Danielpour. These years yielded great leaps and bounds in his compositional output, developing his own personal conception of harmony and rhythm with works such as the chamber music cycle “Book of Duets,” three works for large ensembles, and ideas aplenty for future projects.

In addition to his work in composition, Thacher is also an accomplished performer, with an undergraduate degree from UCLA in oboe performance, and is currently studying at the Mannes School of Music with Ryan Roberts. His most recent engagements include performances with the New York-based wind quintet Indigo Winds, the Mannes Sounds Festival Finale at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, and a residency with Fivemind Reeds (of which he is a founding member) for Interlochen Public Radio’s Sound Garden Project, where his work for reed quintet “Ballet” was premiered.

Writing for bassoon can be daunting; writing for two of them even moreso.
but I’m grateful now to have had the chance to do so.
The two bassoons in this piece spend some time overlapping each other on
similar materials, and some time playing the exact same things together. It is the
transitions between these two states, from two individuals running at their own paces
to being in lockstep with one another, that fascinate me. I’m interested in the moment
when two individuals blend together like watercolor.

Luka Vezmar

Luka Vezmar is a composer, oboist, accordionist and all around music lover. Since he was 9 months old, he has gone to many concerts with his family and friends which always inspires him to write more music. He grew up playing the piano and various other instruments throughout schooling like the trumpet, saxophone, and oboe. He decided to continue with the oboe and is pursuing a BM in Oboe Performance as well as in Composition. While Luka’s music encompasses many different fields, he specializes in classical instrumental music, with the hopes of getting accordion into the main stream classical music world. Luka always has a very distinct character in his music, which to him makes the music seem alive. He hopes that the audience can connect with his music and hopefully leave feeling just a little better than when they came in.

Vetheuil is a piece for Double Reed Trio (Oboe, English Horn, and Bassoon), inspired by paintings of Claude Monet, bearing the same name. Vetheuil is a small town in France, located on the Sienne, about 60 kilometers northwest of Paris. Monet painted many versions of Vetheuil, usually with different light effects, or during different times of the day. I chose 6 paintings that told the story of how this town looked through the course of one day, with each painting being assigned a movement. Dawn, Morning, Day, Afternoon, Evening and Sunset. Each movement is attacca, making the piece feel continuous, just like a regular day is. I hope you enjoy Vetheuil.

James Scott

James Scott (He/they) holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is set to receive a Master's degree in performance at Colorado State University in Spring 2024. The primary instructors studied under include Ann Kosanavic-Brown, Dr. Remy Taghavi, and Dr. Cayla Bellamy.
As a bassoonist/composer, they advocate for more inclusion of chamber music and new music. One of their biggest goals as a performer is to help bring to the forefront the music of traditionally underrepresented groups and give their talents the recognition they deserve. Especially those who are non-binary or neurodivergent, as they can best speak to those experiences.

This piece is a musical depiction of a shantyman's journey aboard a ship. The shantyman had the task of coordinating tedious hard work by many people at the same time, requiring steady beats to ensure everyone heaves or pulls together in unison. A lot of their work still consisted of passing the time and providing musical entertainment to the crew. This piece follows a fictional novice shantyman who is aboard a ship on a treachous journey for the first time. They go through waves of emotions but in the end, everything comes together finding their way through the storm.

This piece is built around emotions and perspectives. It is shown through the perspective of more than one person, the titular three introverts and one drinker, who find themselves at the bar, awkwardly attempting to make conversation. The music walks the line of atonality, putting conventional melodies atop dissonant harmonies. This is meant to portray masked insecurity. The characters seem secure on the surface, as their melodies display, but deep down, they all have an insecurity.
