IDRS Contraband

IDRS Contraband 2025, Indianapolis, IN.

Contraband 2025 Indianapolis, IN

Introduction

Contraband is the International Double Reed Society’s semi-annual celebration of the biggest voice in the bassoon family. Originally established by contrabassoonist Harry Searing in 2014 at IDRS Conference in New York, for the first time in 2026 it will be an official ongoing conference activity. This one-of-a-kind gathering brings together contrabassoonists of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels to make music, build community, and revel in the joy of playing together.

Open to professionals, students, educators, and enthusiastic amateurs alike, Contraband features large-ensemble performances of original compositions and creative arrangements written specifically for the contrabassoon. The emphasis is on collaboration, experimentation, and shared sound—no auditions, no hierarchy, just a lot of low notes and collective energy.

While the music-making is serious in its craft, the atmosphere is intentionally not. Contraband embraces humor, curiosity, and the sheer fun of putting a roomful of contrabassoons on stage. It’s a welcoming, inclusive space where newcomers sit next to veterans, friendships form quickly, and the contrabassoon gets its moment in the spotlight—often with a smile.

Equal parts performance, community, and good-natured mischief, Contraband is a reminder that making music together can be both excellent and joyful.

Repertoire

The Contraband ensemble will perform works written or arranged specifically for contrabassoon ensemble, featuring rich low-register textures and a variety of musical styles suitable for a wide range of ages and skill levels. All sheet music will be provided in advance so participants can prepare comfortably before the conference, ensuring a fun, welcoming, and low-pressure experience for everyone involved.

All performers must be IDRS members and registered conference participants.
Attendance at at least one scheduled rehearsal is required.

Why Participate?

Contraband is a rare opportunity to experience the contrabassoon in its most joyful and communal form. Whether you are a seasoned professional, a student discovering the instrument, or an enthusiastic amateur, Contraband offers a welcoming space to make music alongside others who share your love of the low end.

Beyond the music, Contraband is about connection. It’s a chance to meet fellow contrabassoonists across generations, trade stories and ideas, and be part of a supportive, inclusive community within IDRS. The atmosphere is collaborative, lighthearted, and intentionally fun—we take the music seriously, but not ourselves.

If you’re looking to stretch your musical horizons, celebrate a uniquely powerful instrument, and leave IDRS with great memories (and even better low notes), Contraband is for you.
